So this week is my last week of work at my current employer.  Friday will be 3 years and 1 day that I have been employed with this IT consulting firm.  I can say that I’ve had a roller coaster of a ride and have enjoyed most of it.  There were many twists and turns, and while it wasn’t always smooth I have learned an unbelievable amount of things during my time here.  I’ve always said to my colleagues here that “It ain’t the years, it’s the mileage”.  I believe that statement holds very true.  I’ve learned so much in the past little while that it’s akin to working 10+ years at another company.  I really mean that.  Countless lessons have been learned that have given me a greater understanding of myself and where I want to be in life.  Those lessons have essentially brought me here.  After analyzing all of my priorities I have decided to step away from the game.

A Supportive Cast is Important

When I decided to leave, my mother wrote me a great email that included the tagline that you see at the top of my blog.  The exact line read:  “There’s more talent and skills in you other than project management.  You’ve just not had the chance to discover them yourself, let alone, use them.”  That line resonated very deeply within me.  I knew at that point that I had made the right decision for my career, for my family, and ultimately, for myself.  I am very fortunate to have a supportive group of family and friends that respect my decision and who helped me to realize that I am capable of greater things.  I also am very grateful to my employer for all the opportunities that they have provided me over the years.  I consider myself very lucky to have all of this, and have come out of the experience more wiser, knowledgeable about myself, and knowing who and what are important to me in life.

Inspiration to Act

I suppose that I was always open to the idea that I have a deep set of skills that I haven’t been able to utilize yet.  For awhile though, I never really began to explore that idea further, but I certainly am willing now.  Part of the inspiration of this blog is that the idea that I can help people keep their head above water in today’s IT landscape.  Let’s face it, the field of information technology can be a tiring, thankless profession at times and often one comes to question “what does it matter?” or “why bother?”  From my own experience I can provide my answers from the standpoint of having been there myself, asking those very same questions.  I will further develop these thoughts in future posts.  That is just one way I can help people.  Perhaps one day you can also help me.  Karma is a good thing, and so I want to give back as much as everyone has given me.
